EVERTON 1 CHELSEA 1

Posted on: Sat 29 Jan 2011

Chelsea had to come from a goal down to earn an FA Cup replay at Everton on Saturday afternoon.

Substitute Salomon Kalou did the trick 16 minutes from time when he slotted home into the bottom corner at a time when it looked for all the world like the holders would be heading out at the fourth round stage.

A first half of limited quality had provided chances for both sides but it was the home side who took the lead just after the hour when Louis Saha headed home Leighton Baines's corner, prompting Kalou's introduction from the bench.

With hindsight it is Chelsea who will be more pleased with the draw, a below-par performance going relatively unpunished, and we will be favourites to progress from the replay on home soil.

Before this game Carlo Ancelotti had declared the bad moment his side were experiencing officially over, but Everton would be expected to offer a stern examination on a cold Saturday lunchtime in the north-west.

The manager recalled fit again Frank Lampard, preferred to John Mikel Obi, in his only personnel change from the side that beat Bolton so convincingly on Monday night. That meant a change of role for Michael Essien, who dropped back to anchor midfield and accommodate the attacking Lampard.

Everton reverted from their recent 4-4-2 to a lone forward, Louis Saha, who was supported by a five-man midfield with Marouane Fellaini holding.

Didier Drogba, scorer of a spectacular goal on Monday, had the game's first effort five minutes in when he shot tamely at Everton's goalkeeper Tim Howard.

At the other end Diniyar Bilyaletdinov got the wrong side of Jose Bosingwa but couldn't poke the ball past Petr Cech to boost his side's decent start to the game, and then Essien turned Ramires's low cross over the Everton bar.

Half-chances, then, at both ends, but none came as close as John Terry 17 minutes in when he headed onto the roof of the net after Malouda had sent over a precise corner.

When Essien lost possession in a dangerous area to Fellaini, it looked like the home side would take the lead. The tackle allowed Louis Saha to release Jack Rodwell, but his low and powerful shot was well blocked by Cech who was seeking his fourth straight clean sheet.

Drogba and Ramires combined to put Nicolas Anelka through on goal after half an hour, but his shot was turned behind by Howard, as was Malouda's five minutes later meaning it was goalless at half-time.

It had been an open and at times entertaining first period yet neither side had been able to capitalise when in strong positions, or done enough to warrant a lead. Both had been slack in possession and occasionally too hesitant to throw numbers forward when attacks showed promise, meaning thoughts were already turning to a possible replay on February 19.

The first chance of the second half was Everton's, and came after Terry had mishit a pass straight at the energetic Seamus Coleman. He put Fellaini away and the cross to the far post picked out Saha, but the Frenchman found his way to goal blocked by a flying Ramires block. The Brazilian is really beginning to settle in England, and was one of Chelsea's better performers.

Cech had to tip Fellaini's header over to preserve the stalemate on 55, but he could do nothing the next time the ball entered his box.

Neville's cross was turned behind for a corner, and from Leighton Baines's inswinging cross, Saha found himself unmarked after Terry had misjudged the flight of the ball, and headed powerfully into the bottom corner.

It was Baines who crossed for Everton's equaliser at Stamford Bridge in December, and Saha, so often Chelsea's nemesis, once again providing the final touch.

The holders were in real trouble, and had not created a second-half opportunity to speak of. Everton were still looking the likelier to score as Cech parried Coleman's header and Essien had to throw himself full length in front of the follow-up to keep the deficit down.

From the corner though, it was the Blues who broke and substitute Salomon Kalou ran at his man before slipping the ball across goal and into the bottom corner. It was his second in as many FA Cup games, and a much-needed goal for a player who has looked low on confidence.

Now the game took on a different complexion, and with 15 minutes still to play both sides would be searching for a winner.

With five minutes left, Ramires almost found it. Striding forward from midfield he found himself in space and opted to shoot, his effort beating Howard but bouncing back into play off the foot of the goalkeeper's left-hand post.

Everton would have their own opportunity with a minute remaining. Branislav Ivanovic, otherwise faultless today, sliced a clearance to put sub Jermaine Beckford in on goal. His left-footed half-volley was excellently struck, but straight enough for Cech to acrobatically tip behind and keep Chelsea in the tie.

In injury time, Essien headed wide at one end and Saha the other but no goals would come, and so it is back to the Bridge, likely to be on Saturday, February 19.

'Drogba sudah temui sentuhan'

2011/01/17

- AFP

A commanding performance took Chelsea into the fourth round of the FA Cup and is certain to boost the side's morale.

Daniel Sturridge and Frank Lampard netted a brace each, added to by Salomon Kalou, Nicolas Anelka and Ipswich's Carlos Edwards, who nodded a Lampard freekick into his own net. Those goals combined to create the second biggest FA Cup win in the club's history.

It was a dominating performance from the Chelsea side, which included several young stars, and kick-started the FA Cup campaign which takes us to Goodison Park for a clash against Everton in the next round.

Josh McEachran started in midfield alongside Ramires and Frank Lampard, replacing Michael Essien who was on the bench. There was one change in defence from the side which faced Wolves midweek as Patrick Van Aanholt lined up at left-back.

Carlo Ancelotti also opted to put Didier Drogba on the bench; instead Nicolas Anelka sat in the centre of an attacking three. On his left, Daniel Sturridge started his first game since we hosted Zilina in the Champions League, while Salomon Kalou took up position on the right wing.

This was the seventh successive year Chelsea started the FA Cup campaign at home to a lower division club. We last met Ipswich at Stamford Bridge in January 2009, when an outstanding Lampard goal sealed a 3-1 victory.

When this season's game kicked-off on a sun-soaked pitch, Chelsea immediately took the initiative. Anelka nearly latched onto a Ramires through ball before Kalou narrowly missed connecting with a Van Aanholt cross after the young left-back broke past three players.

Sturridge nearly netted the opener after feeding off a perfect Lampard ball into the box but was denied by goalkeeper Martin Fulop who conceded a second corner before the 10-minute mark. Our number 23 then shot wide after gathering a Jose Bosingwa ball in front of goal.

An acrobatic Fulop save prevented an Anelka chance from finding the net as Chelsea smothered the visitors. The Ipswich shot-stopper denied the Frenchman again moments later. That was from a shot from 20 yards.

Ipswich's first real chance came when Jason Scotland broke on the counter-attack and forced Petr Cech to cover the far post, where he beat Connor Wickham to the ball before deflecting for a corner.

Wickham had a shot on goal minutes later and forced a good save from Cech, which in turn led to a clearance off the line by Troy Brown for Ipswich as Chelsea broke on the counter. Quick-footed Anelka struck a crisp shot which beat Fulop but not the defender.

McEachran, who looked comfortable in midfield, was next to worry the opposition fans with a cleanly-hit, left-footed effort from the edge of the box that was deflected for a corner. As Chelsea began to hone in on the target, Anelka sent a shot curling past the top right.

With 32 minutes played, Chelsea scored. Anelka's deft touch controlled a Kalou pass before the Frenchman danced his way into the box and shot. Fulop got his hands to the ball but the momentum was too much as it carried on towards the line and was helped over by a sliding Kalou.

The goal was the Ivorian's 50th in a Chelsea shirt and seconds later it was two. After a Bosingwa cross found Sturridge's feet at the near post the striker flicked a fantastic effort clean into the net on 33 minutes.

Chelsea wanted more and continued to pressure the Ipswich box. When David Norris fouled John Terry on the left flank, Lampard stepped up to take the set piece. It was the beginning of an own-goal as Carlos Edwards nodded the dangerous ball into his own net with three minutes of the first-half to play.

Ancelotti made no changes before the second-half got underway and Chelsea continued as they'd left off. Within minutes of the restart a confident McEachran dribbled through the defence before setting up Anelka to test Fulop once more.

The Frenchman was denied from his first shot of the half but his second, from the same position, flew in after a clever one-two between him and Kalou with 49 minutes played. The Frenchman scored from an acute angle.

Then Sturridge did it again! Finding himself with space just inside the box, the striker curled the ball past an out-stretched Fulop and into the bottom right with a right-foot strike. We were only seven minutes into the half.

With a comfortable lead established, Kalou made way for Gael Kakuta to come on and Chelsea were looking confident with plenty of fluid football. When Ipswich did win possession they were forced into long-ball football or shooting from far out.

Then, seconds after the restart, our vice-captain netted another as he slid onto an Ivanovic cross at the far post as Chelsea once again pressured the Ipswich area.

In stoppage time Gael Kakuta had the chance to increase Chelsea's lead after latching onto a through ball from Anelka but, after finding himself one-on-one with Fulop, the subsequent shot was deflected out for a corner.

There was still time for two more Chelsea corners as Fulop twice denied Anelka. The score stayed at 7-0 - a comfortable victory and the perfect start to our FA Cup campaign.

Bimbang hilang Ancelotti

- Agensi

Arsenal on top of Premiership as Chelsea miss out

By Agence France-Presse, Updated: Saturday, December 04, 2010 6:21 PM

Arsenal went top of the Premier League by a point after Samir Nasri scored twice in a 2-1 victory over London rivals Fulham on Saturday.

English champions Chelsea, who would also have gone above Manchester United had they won, drew 1-1 at home to Everton after Jermaine Beckford, who began his career at Stamford Bridge, equalised four minutes from time to cancel out Didier Drogba's first-half penalty.

United had to endure a frustrating afternoon after their match away to Blackpool was postponed because of a frozen pitch.

At the other end of the table, Wolves dropped to the bottom on goal difference following a 3-0 loss away to Blackburn Rovers, who bounced back in style after a 7-1 loss to United.

Saturday's other top-flight matches saw 10-man Manchester City see off Bolton 1-0 while Birmingham drew 1-1 with Tottenham and Wigan shared the points with Stoke in a 2-2 draw.

"We once again have shown fantastic quality and spirit," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told Sky Sports.

"Credit to Nastri as well, he got two outstanding goals. He's just been voted French player of the year and that gives you more confidence.

"Apart from that, it's a combination of skill, intelligence and calm - that's what you need to score in the box."

But disappointed Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti said: "Our performance was not good, the second half was poor.

"We didn't play our football, just long ball. It was difficult to understand why this happened. My team has to play better."

However, it was a different story for Ancelotti's fellow Italian Roberto Mancini after a victory for his Manchester City side left them just three points behind Arsenal.

"We deserved this, we had a lot of chances. At this moment Bolton is one of the best teams in England and to win against them is very important."

Drogba gave Chelsea the lead three minutes before half-time from the penalty spot after Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard was yellow-carded for bringing down Nicolas Anelka.

But they were made to pay for not scoring again when substitute Beckford nodded in from close range after Australia international Tim Cahill had headed on Leighton Baines's cross.

Arsenal took a 14th-minute lead when midfielder Nasri, played in by Russia's Andrey Arshavin, sold two dummies before shooting high into the net.

However, Fulham were level on the half-hour mark.

Laurent Koscielny and Sebastian Squillaci collided, allowing United States international Clint Dempsey to play in Diomansy Kamara, who curled in from 12 yards out.

But Nasri restored Arsenal's lead 15 minutes from time with a superb second goal, beating a defender and Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, once a Gunners target, before shooting home following a layoff from Robin van Persie.

Carlos Tevez gave City a fourth-minute lead against Bolton in the fourth minute after latching on to Yaya Toure's through ball.

But the hosts had to play the last 11 minutes at Eastlands with 10 men after Aleksandar Kolarov was sent-off for a second yellow card.

In-form Tottenham went ahead against Birmingham in the 19th minute when Cameroon defender Sebastien Bassong got on the end of Gareth Bale's free-kick.

But the Blues were level nine minutes from time when Craig Gardner headed in from close range.

Stoke went ahead at the Britannia Stadium when Robert Huth's 22-yard free-kick was deflected past Wigan keeper Ali Al Habsi in the 18th minute.

Wigan equalised on the half hour through a Danny Collins own-goal but a minute later Stoke's Matthew Etherington shot home from Ricardo Fuller's pass.

But Wigan though were back level five minutes before the break thanks to Tom Cleverly's deflected shot.

Blackburn, who'd seen Wolves hit the woodwork several times, went ahead at Ewood Park when, after Morten Gamset Pedersen's corner was headed back across goal by Ryan Nelsen, David Dunn headed in from six yards.

Rovers doubled their lead two minutes before half-time when Australia midfielder Brett Emerton shot powerfully after good work from Jason Roberts.

Blackburn sealed victory when unmarked New Zealand centre-half Nelsen turned in Pedersen's free-kick.

West Ham, now second bottom, face Sunderland on Sunday when West Brom play Newcastle.

Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier returns to Anfield on Monday with Aston Villa.

CHELSEA WINS IN WORLD CUP PLAY-OFFS

Nicolas Anelka's goal placed France in a healthy position to make the World Cup Finals after Saturday's play-off first leg.

The Chelsea striker's 72nd minute shot from just outside the area deflected in off Republic of Ireland defender Sean St. Ledger and the post for a 1-0 win in Dublin.

Florent Malouda was introduced as a substitute in the stoppage time and France take their advantage to Paris for Wednesday's second leg.

Ricardo Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira and Deco were all in the starting line-up for Portugal as they beat Bosnia-Herzegovina by the same scoreline, this time at home. Hilario, on his first call-up to the national squad, didn't make the bench. Ferreira, often a left-back for his nation, was selected on his preferred right side.

After 31 minutes defender Bruno Alves scored the goal for the Portuguese, who were without Cristiano Ronaldo. Bosnia-Herzegovina hit woodwork twice in the 89th minute. Deco came off on 86 minutes with pain in a groin muscle.

There was a pleasing sight from a Chelsea point of view in the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow where Yury Zhirkov (pictured below left) completed the full 90 minutes of Russia's 2-1 win over Slovenia.

Playing his first football in three weeks at left-back, Zhirkov deflected wide an early shot by the visitors and then dribbled from his own-half into the opposition area but had a shot saved.

Two later crosses were not converted by Arsenal's Andrey Arshavin and Tottenham's Roman Pavlyuchenko.

Both of Russia's goals were netted by Everton's Diniyar Bilyaletdinov but an 88th minute away goal for Slovenia leaves Guus Hiddink's side with plenty to do on Wednesday.

In friendly internationals, John Terry's ankle injury prevented his participation against Brazil in Qatar so there was the rare sight of no Chelsea players in the England side as they lost 1-0.

Branislav Ivanovic remained on the bench for Serbia as they beat Northern Ireland 1-0 in Belfast.

At Wembley, England Under 21s beat Portugal by a single goal. Michael Mancienne played right-back for the first 76 minutes and it was his long ball into the area that was headed down by Newcastle's Andy Carroll for Spurs striker Danny Rose to score.

Jack Cork was introduced to the midfield on 76 minutes and had an attempt on goal. Ryan Bertrand played the whole game at left-back. Daniel Sturridge remained on the bench.
