RON97 petrol up 10 sen to RM2.50

PETALING JAYA: The price of premium RON97 petrol will be 10 sen higher at RM.250 per litre from Tuesday.

According to Malaysian Petrol Dealers Association president Datuk Hashim Othman, the Finance Ministry confirmed the price Monday evening.

"It's a monthly review based on the world oil price. The ministry performed the assessment and decided on the price increase," he said when contacted.

The last price increase for RON97 petrol was on Jan 4, also by 10 sen.

The price of RON97 petrol is subjected to a managed float, as announced by the Government in July last year, to reflect the global market price.

There's no increase in the price of subsidised fuel like RON95 petrol, diesel and LPG.

Direct trains to Batu Caves for Thaipusam

KUALA LUMPUR: Devotees heading to Batu Caves for Thaipusam can look forward to a faster and more convenient journey this year.

KTM Bhd is providing 182 direct shuttle trains between the old KL railway station and Batu Caves in conjunction with the festival.

It will be the first time KTMB is offering the service which will run for three days from Jan 19 to 21. Thaipusam falls on Jan 20.

An additional 36 trains will also be provided for return trips on other routes which are the Rawang-KL, Seremban-KL and the Klang-Batu Caves lines.

“We expect 80,000 people to use the additional services this year,”said KTMB commuter services senior manager Azreen Mohamed Yusup, adding that food and drink stalls as well as a reflexology corner would be set up at the Batu Caves station.

She said passengers will also enjoy a special discount on ticket prices from any station heading towards Batu Caves.

Meanwhile, visitors to Batu Caves will be able to take a cable car ride to the Sri Subramaniam Swamy Temple at the top of the hill next year.

Temple chairman Datuk R. Nadarajah said the RM10mil project is expected to be completed in time for the 2012 Thaipusam festival.

“The service will benefit the elderly and physically disabled who are unable to climb the 272 stairs,” he said.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed between the temple management and the developer of the cable car service, Calcutta-based Damodar Ropeways, during Thaipusam on Jan 20.

He added that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had accepted the invitation to join the celebrations and witness the signing of the MOU along with Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia Vijay Gokhale.

Government announces subsidy reductions for fuel, sugar

KUALA LUMPUR: The government today announced subsidy reductions of five sen per litre for RON 95 petrol and diesel, five sen per kg for LPG and 20 sen per kg for sugar effective tomorrow.

With the reduction, RON95 petrol will cost RM1.90 per litre, diesel RM1.80 per litre, LPG RM1.90 per kg and sugar RM2.10 per kg.

The subsidy rationalisation announcement was made in a joint statement by the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism and the Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu) of the Prime Minister’s Department.

The statement said that despite the increase, Malaysia's retail prices for all the items remained lower than those in neighbouring countries, such as Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.

For example, the price per litre for RON95 petrol is RM2.46 in Indonesia, RM4.36 in Singapore and RM4.25 in Thailand, while the price per litre for diesel is RM2.50 in Indonesia, RM3.18 in Singapore and RM2.96 in Thailand.

LPG costs RM2 per kg in Indonesia, RM6.42 in Singapore and RM1.93 in Thailand while sugar is priced at RM3.50 per kg in Indonesia, RM3.80 in Singapore and RM2.80 in Thailand.

The first step towards the subsidy rationalisation programme was made on July 16 when subsidies for RON95 petrol and diesel were reduced by five sen per litre, for LPG by 10 sen per kg, and for sugar by 25 sen per kg.

The statement said the subsidy rationalisation was necessary as the government recognised that it must continue to manage its fiscal position by enhancing revenue and, at the same time, reducing expenditure.

The Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) aimed to increase the Gross National Income (GNI) per capita to reach US$15,000 by the year 2020, it said.

To achieve this, it added, the GDP must grow at least at six per cent per annum and this would allow government revenue to increase via tax collection.

The Government Transformation Programme (GTP) attempted to address issues in the six National Key Result Areas (NKRAs), amongst which poverty, rural basic infrastructure and education clearly had an impact on the bottom 40 per cent of the population, it said.

For example, it said, since January this year, the government had built 538km of rural roads, 260 per cent more than the previous year, opened 1,358 pre-school classes benefiting 54,569 children, and reduced the number of hardcore poor households by 55 per cent.

The government was taking the welfare of the poor people as a key priority under the GTP, the statement said. -- BERNAMA

Malaysian ex-sultan loses bid to reclaim throne

A former Malaysian sultan who was ousted by his son earlier this year on Friday lost a bid to overturn the appointment in the nation's highest court.

A three-member Federal Court panel threw out two petitions by Tengku Ismail Petra Yahya Petra, the former ruler of northern Kelantan state, in favor of his eldest son Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra, who is now Sultan Muhammad V.

After months of palace intrigue that captivated Malaysia, Tengku Muhammad Faris was appointed the new ruler in September, using his powers as regent to replace his frail father who has been incapacitated since a stroke a year ago.

The former sultan's two sons had been at loggerheads for the past year since the younger brother was removed from the state's succession council, which determines who is the next ruler.

In handing down the unanimous judgement on two of three petitions filed against the present Kelantan ruler, Justice Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin said the Regent was vested with all the powers of the Sultan.

"We are of the view that there can be only one individual attending to affairs of the state of Kelantan at any one time," he said.

Malaysia has nine sultans, who are the royal rulers and guardians of Islam in their respective states. Under a unique rotating monarchy, they each take turns to rule for five years as the nation's king.

The royals assume a ceremonial role and rarely speak publicly. The events in Kelantan -- including earlier allegations that the ailing sultan had been held in hospital against his will -- caused a major stir.

Last year, the Kelantan royals were embroiled in another controversy when the teenage wife of the younger son slipped away and returned to her family in Indonesia alleging abuse, rape and torture by the prince.

The former ruler's lawyer Azhar Azizan Harun said the court disagreed with their assertion that as regent, Tengku Muhammad Faris' authority and powers were limited.

"The effect of today's ruling is that once the regent is appointed, he is able to exercise all royal functions," he said.

Azhar said the court had yet to rule on a third petition which challenged the present Sultan's amendment of the state constitution in order to allow for more grounds to declare his father incapacitated.

"No date has been set for a ruling on the third petition and I will have to seek instructions from my client on how to proceed," he said.

Tindik maut

Oleh Mohd Jamilul Anbia Md Denin dan Syarifah Dayana Syed Bakri
am@hmetro.com.my

“Bahagian mulut contohnya sangat mudah menerima jangkitan kerana sentiasa basah dan terdapat banyak bakteria, apatah lagi jika si pemakai kurang mementingkan penjagaan mulut,” katanya ketika dihubungi, semalam.

Mengimbas pengalamannya bertindik buat kali pertama lima tahun lalu, Lisa berkata, dia mula terpengaruh untuk bertindik kerana tertarik melihat rakan sekolah berbuat demikian.

Another fuel price cut?

KUALA LUMPUR, Thurs:

The government will decide whether to cut the petrol price again during the National Economic Council meeting on Dec 1, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said today.

According to him, there is a possibility for another round of petrol price cut after the meeting and the main issue to deliberate is whether to have a managed float or floor price for petrol.

“Currently, we are adjusting the price every two weeks according to market prices,” Shahrir told reporters at the Parliament lobby here.

He said since this month, the government has stopped subsidising the petrol price at service stations.

“The current petrol price at RM2 a litre is higher than market prices,” he added.
Shahrir said for the months of August, September and October, the petrol pump retail prices at petrol stations were lower than the market prices.

“In August, the petrol pump price was RM2.55 per litre while the market price was RM2.83. For September, the petrol pump price was RM2.45 per litre while the market price was RM2.77 and for October, the petrol pump price was RM2.15 per litre while the market price was RM2.26,” he said.

On service station operators, Shahrir said among the conditions was that they must be Malaysian citizens.

On controlling the prices of goods, he said the government has the power to control prices through the issuance of licences to suppliers.

Rawatan pelik `bomoh seluk’

Oleh Mohd Nur Asnawi Daud
asnawi@hmetro.com.my

Dia kemudian membuat laporan polis, kelmarin.

Suspek kini ditahan reman seminggu bermula semalam.
